Austin Grant Box
August 10, 1988 – May 19, 2011
Austin Box
Austin Box loved his family, friends, teammates and playing sports. He excelled in football, baseball, and basketball. He was a leader and mentor on and off the field. However, sports were just one aspect of Austin's life; he loved vacations with friends and family, playing video games, and teaching his rescued dog, Jazmine, tricks.

Austin graduated from Enid High School in December of 2006 and enrolled early at the University of Oklahoma where he received a full scholarship to play football. From a very early age it had always been Austin’s dream to play football at the University of Oklahoma.  He was honored to have received a scholarship and enjoyed living his dream, never taking advantage of the opportunity that was given to him.

Starting from a couple of injuries in High School, he began a career plagued with injury setbacks but continued to persevere and fight back, gaining more and more playing time until he ultimately earned a starting position.  After fighting a plaguing back injury in what was ultimately his final season of football, the 2010 season, Austin came back to help lead the Sooners to another Big XII Championship and a BSC berth against Connecticut in the Fiesta Bowl.

Austin graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Sociology/Criminology on May 14th, 2011 and was applying for graduate school. He had one final season of football eligibility and was excited to begin the next phase of his life.  He often joked about finally being a real student, being able to sleep in and enjoy having a little free time.  He never regretted his time playing for the University of Oklahoma, but he was ready for football to not be his entire life.

Unfortunately on May 19th 2011, Austin passed away before fulfilling all of his dreams and living the rest of his life. He left behind friends that loved him greatly, teammates and coaches that respected him, and a family that adored and loved him.  His spirit has lived on through the people he had affected throughout his life, whether it was on or off the field.

Austin lived each day of his life to its fullest. He never let injuries or setbacks change his outlook on life and remained positive while never complaining through any of it. He was an inspiration to everyone around him and a beloved member of the University of Oklahoma Football team.

Because of the importance of helping others in Austin's life, whether they were a person or a dog, the Austin Box Memorial Scholarship Fund has been set up to assist student athletes realize their dreams. It is the desire of Austin's family to honor Austin's memory through assisting student athletes that have shown their leadership abilities, perseverance and humor in sports, the classroom and in their everyday lives.
